Our names are Kiersten and Krista and we are the founders of Shaka Bowl. When we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii back in 2014, we didn’t realize that our whole life perspective would forever be altered. We absolutely fell in love with the culture, the people, the life, and of course, the food! We knew right away that we needed to share this unbelievable culture with our family and friends on the East Coast. So, just a short time later, here we are. Each Organic bowl has a premium açai/pitaya base blended to a smooth, sorbet like consistency. Each bowl is then topped with an eclectic mix of fresh fruit, granola, nuts and more. Plant based, dairy and gluten free and absolutely delicious. Shaka’s version of poké is a base of sticky white rice, brown rice, mixed greens, or zucchini noodles, topped with your choice of fresh protein, mix-ins, and finally garnished with one of our housemade signature sauces.
Acaí is a fatty fruit that happens to be naturally sugar-free, and also happens to be a super food. Acai helps brighten skin, fight harmful organisms, assists in losing and/or maintaining a healthy weight and promotes skin health. The acai berry is an inch-long, reddish-purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. Some studies show that acai fruit pulp is even richer in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries. The acai berry is a good source of fiber, antioxidants, and heart-healthy fats.
Pitaya Dragon fruits have a surprising number of phytonutrients. Rich in antioxidants, they contain vitamin C, polyunsaturated (good) fatty acids, and several B vitamins for carbohydrate metabolism, as well as carotene and protein. Along with being a moderately good source of iron, the dragon fruit also contains essential B vitamins which our bodies use to perform a host of other duties, like helping to metabolize carbohydrates, lowering bad cholesterol levels, and nourishing the skin. And to top it all off, one serving of dragon fruit offers about 12% of your daily recommended amount of dietary fiber.
Poké is nearly impossible to avoid in Hawaii, served everywhere from run-of-the-mill grocery stores to gas stations, surf shacks, and beyond-it is literally everywhere. Traditionally, poké (po-kay), is chunks of tuna marinated or topped in various soy and sesame-based sauces. But poké is such a ubiquitous term that it can mean anything that is ``cut or sliced into chunks``, per the Hawaiian word's definition. When it comes to fish poké, the most common kind is tuna, but here at Shaka we believe you can get the same savory fix with chicken, shrimp or even tofu. The Shaka version of poké is your choice of sticky white rice, brown rice, mixed greens, or zucchini noodles topped with your choice of protein, unlimited mix-ins, and finally garnished with one of Shaka's signature, house-made savory sauces.
